FOR SALE: Historic Johnson City Bank Building
The former Marine Midland Bank building in downtown Johnson City is on the market.
The structure at 243 Main Street had been home to village government offices in recent decades. The place has been vacant since government operations were moved to a renovated building at 60 Lester Avenue a year ago.
The Main Street building was constructed in 1931 for the Workers Trust Company, a bank founded by George F. Johnson and other local businessmen.
Robert Harkness of Harkness Realty Group said a "For Sale" sign was placed on the building this week. He said the property will be put on the market shortly with an asking price of $500,000 "as is."
Although most of the equipment and furnishings had been removed from the building months ago, there were still a few items being stored at the site until recent weeks.
Some features that were part of the bank - including a massive vault and a long counter for teller windows - remain in place.
