Suspects Sought After Gunshots Fired Near Binghamton Park
Binghamton police are trying to locate those involved in a shots fired incident near a popular city park.
Police were called to the Woodburn Court II apartment complex just south of Columbus Park shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.
Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said people in the area reported hearing gunshots but there was no immediate indication that anyone was injured in the incident.
Zikuski told WNBF News that a couple of gunshots may have been heard, although investigators weren't sure of the actual number of shots.
Police closed a section of Carroll Street leading to Route 363 to allow detectives to process the scene.
School buses dropped off young children as detectives began their investigation.
Police determined the gunfire erupted following a disturbance outside Apartment C-6 at the Woodburn Court II complex.
Tensions were high shortly after police secured the area and began to interview people nearby.
Several officers encouraged those nearby to disperse. One woman was handcuffed and placed into a police department van to be transported to headquarters three blocks away.
Zikuski said it was too soon to know whether the incident was related to other recent shooting cases around the city.
Two suspects were arrested in connection with an early-morning gun battle on April 27 at the Susquehanna Street apartment complex.
Two others were arrested after that incident for tampering with evidence. Three teenagers were charged after they allegedly became hostile toward police officers.
