Digging Request Submitted for Oakdale Commons Chick-Fil-A Project
There is some movement to report in the long-discussed prospects for a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Broome County.
An application has been submitted to allow excavation for a potential Chick-Fil-A project at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City.
Town of Union supervisor Robert Mack said he was notified recently of the request that was filed with UDig NY, which coordinates any digging activity to ensure underground utilities are protected.
Mack said the excavating application that referenced "Chick-Fil-A" specified the southeast corner of the mall property near the intersection of Reynolds Road and Harry L. Drive.
The town supervisor noted there's a Key Bank located near that spot and there's also some additional empty space on the Oakdale Commons site.
Mack told WNBF News on Friday he had learned of the request a few days ago.
While he was pleased to see the Chick-Fil-A reference, Mack said he doesn't know "if it's absolutely going to happen." But he said "I think it's hopeful" although there are no details available about the potential project.
Marc Newman, a partner in Oakdale Commons owner Spark JC, said he had not been aware that an excavation request had been made for a future Chick-Fil-A.
Newman said there is not a signed lease for a new development at the site, although there have been discussions for projects at that location.
Newman said the Key Bank lease runs through the end of the year.
Chick-Fil-A's media relations office did not respond immediately to a request for comment about future restaurants in the Binghamton area.
People in the Binghamton area have been buzzing about the arrival of Chick-Fil-A in the market. Speculation for the chain's first local restaurant has centered on the Oakdale Commons and in the area of the Vestal Parkway.
