The Executive Director of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, Colleen McCabe is the featured guest on the September 2 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up talking about an on-going program to protect residents from injury and death in fires.

Sound the Alarm installs free 10-year lithium battery powered smoke alarms and fire safety instruction to residents requesting the service.

McCabe says volunteers will evaluate the needs of a home and install the necessary devices as well as help residents plan evacuation routes, fire drills and disaster kits.

The latest program is being held September 23-October 15. But the service is provided year-round.

McCabe says the timing of this special push is important as the region approaches the heating season when the number of structure fires typically increases.

Residents can schedule an installation by calling the local chapter at (607) 785-7207.
