For the second year in a row, Broome County is stepping up to make sure no one misses out on vital vaccines this winter.

Starting November 1, 2025, and running through March 31, 2026, residents can hop on any Broome County Transit bus and ride for free to get their COVID-19, flu, or RSV shots. Just let the driver know you’re heading to or coming from your vaccine appointment, and your fare is covered.

Local Partnership Drives Access to Lifesaving Vaccines

This effort comes from a partnership between the Broome County Health Department and Broome County Transit, two local departments that share one goal: keeping our community healthy and connected. Last year, the free ride initiative helped hundreds of residents make it to their vaccine appointments. For many, it removed one of the biggest barriers to healthcare, transportation.

Breaking Down Transportation Barriers to Better Health

You might be surprised to learn that every year, about 5.8 million Americans delay or skip medical care because they don’t have reliable transportation. The county is working to change that. By offering free bus rides, they’re making it easier for anyone, especially seniors, parents, and those without a car, to access the vaccines that help protect against serious illness.

Who Should Get Vaccinated and Why Officials Say It Matters

Everyone six months and older is encouraged to get the COVID-19 and flu vaccines this season. RSV vaccines are also available for those most at risk - pregnant people, babies, adults 75 and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions. Local health officials urge residents to talk to their doctor or pharmacist about which vaccines are right for them. These shots are safe, effective, and proven to reduce hospitalizations and deaths.

Winter Weather and Holiday Gatherings Increase Virus Risks

Cold weather weakens our immune systems, and holiday gatherings bring us close together, prime conditions for viruses like COVID-19, the flu, and RSV to spread. These respiratory illnesses can cause fever, cough, body aches, and, in severe cases, pneumonia or respiratory failure. The best way to protect yourself and others is simple: get vaccinated, wash your hands often, cover your coughs and sneezes, and stay home if you’re feeling under the weather.
