An abandoned electricity generating facility in the town of Union could soon be torn down to clear the site for a redevelopment project.

The former coal-fired Goudey Station in Westover was operated by New York State Electric and Gas for decades.

A Massachusetts-based entity acquired Goudey-related properties off Riverside Drive in December from GMMM Westover LLC for $1 million.

The new owner is planning to demolish the old power plant with the intention of building a commercial solar farm on the site.

A representative of Solar Generation Projects LLC made a presentation about the proposed project at a March 9 town planning board meeting.

A call to the company seeking comment about the plans was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Johnson City Mayor Greg Deemie said the existing railroad tracks near the site could be used to haul away demolition debris.

It's not known what remediation work might be required to address contamination at the site before the solar farm project could proceed.
