Fate of Johnson City Supermarket Uncertain
Customers of a discount grocery store in the heart of Johnson City are concerned about the future of the business.
The Save-A-Lot store at 200 Main Street has operated at the site for about five years.
The Arizona-based owner of the property has listed it for sale or lease.
After a sign was posted on the front of the building indicating the site is "available," many customers have been wondering what will happen to the store.
Employees have advised those who have inquired that the Save-A-Lot store is remaining open. But a source familiar with the property said the store's current lease expires in a few weeks.
A short-term lease renewal is possible but the Save-A-Lot store is not expected to stay at the location for much longer.
It's not known whether the store may be moved to a nearby site. A representative at Save-A-Lot corporate headquarters in Missouri was not immediately available to discuss the future of the Johnson City store.
Johnson City Mayor Greg Deemie said he has heard from village residents who are worried about whether the store may be closed. He said he doesn't yet know what is planned for the site.
Deemie noted the store is used by many village residents who live nearby and don't have access to a car.
Broome County property records indicate the current owner acquired the site six years ago for about $525,000.
The asking price for the property is listed at $725,000.
