Fate of Former CVS Building in Downtown Binghamton Uncertain
Business operators and Binghamton officials are wondering what will happen to the downtown property that was occupied by a drug store for 97 years.
The CVS Pharmacy at 34 Court Street closed its doors on November 12. Hamlin's Red Cross Drug Store first moved to the spot in 1924. CVS acquired L.F. Hamlin Incorporated in the 1970s.
The lights have remained on the store and some merchandise remains inside. A sign near store's parking lot on Hawley Street remained posted indicated "Covid-19 vaccines are here."
People at nearby businesses said they believe the old CVS operation is to be cleared from the closed store by the end of December.
The property used by CVS - which consists of three Court Street parcels - is owned by the Rhode Island-based company. CVS officials have not responded to a request from WNBF News for information about the site.
Binghamton mayor-elect Jared Kraham recently said he didn't know what would happen to the site, although nearby property owners say they'd heard CVS wanted to sell it for as much as $2 million.
