Evacuation of Broome Park Followed Text Report of an Armed Person

The sudden closing of Otsiningo Park just north of Binghamton was prompted by a text from someone who claimed to have seen a man with a gun.

Security officers and police quickly evacuated the town of Dickinson facility around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

County Executive Jason Garnar said the 911 dispatch center received a text message indicating a person with what appeared to be a rifle was walking toward the Chenango River.

Garnar discussed the matter Thursday on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program. He said law enforcement officers cleared the park out of an abundance of safety.

The county executive said people who had been in the park were interviewed and the "call was ultimately deemed not credible."

About a dozen police units responded to the park to search the area after the report was received.
