Improvement projects at two busy intersections in the village of Endicott won't be finished before winter.

Traffic and pedestrian signals, along with new sidewalks and curbing, are being installed near the Huron campus, where hundreds of people work for BAE Systems and other companies.

Mayor John Bertoni says the work was expected to have been completed by September 30.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the mayor said some aspects of the original design plans needed to be adjusted. Those changes delayed the project.

The work is being done at the intersections of North Street and McKinley Avenue; and Oak Hill Avenue and Clark Street.

Bertoni said BAE Systems representatives had asked the village to take steps to address safety issues at the intersections.

The mayor said Endicott is using a state grant of about $500,000 to cover most of the cost of the work. The village will pay for about 10 percent of the bill.

Workers at the intersections this week were installing new curbing. Bertoni said the final paving work probably will be done next spring.

The existing traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersections were installed about four decades ago.

The mayor said they would have been replaced sooner but the village simply didn't have the money to pay for the work.
