11:59 p.m. May 17 is the deadline to file your income taxes or at least get an extension filed with an estimate of what you owe.

The New York State Tax Department has help available at www.tax.ny.gov with a resource center to help people with everything from requesting additional information, filing the tax return or checking on the status of a refund.

Taxpayers with incomes of $72,000 or less in 2020 can electronically complete and submit their federal and New York State income tax returns online and at no cost.  To make sure you are not charged, you must go to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website to complete the return, not to the site of an independent or commercial tax preparer.

If you have questions, Tax Department representatives are available until 7 p.m. May 17 at 518-457-5181.
