Delaware County Sheriff’s officials report they nabbed a soggy suspect who tried to get away from police by diving into the West Branch of the Delaware River.

49-year-old Steven Witte of Arkville, New York allegedly fled from Village of Delhi Police July 30 and crashed on State Highway 10 then ran off on foot, jumping into the river.

Sheriff’s officials later located Witte on the riverbank along the County Highway 18 side of the river and arrested him.

He was charged with speeding, failure to comply with police, reckless driving, failure to keep right, moving from a lane unsafely and leaving the scene of an accident before being turned over to the Village of Delhi for additional charges.
