The Almost Annual New York State Crappie Derby has been cancelled.  The Whitney Point Sportsmen's Association and Broome County Parks Department made the announcement February 1.

Crappie Derby Coordinator Dave Hughes in a press release explained that as OF January 29, ice thickness readings ranged from 7.5 inches on the West Channel side of Whitney Point Lake to 9 inches in the pond area.  Generally a foot or more of ice is needed for public safety.

With temperatures in the mid-40's to 50 over the next couple of days the chances of having enough ice to hold the event by mid-February are slim.  The Derby Committee and the office of Broome County Parks were unanimous in their decision to cancel the derby this year.
