The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Broome County is soaring with 78 new positive test results over the past day.

County Executive Jason Garnar announced on Friday afternoon that the number of active cases had jumped to 304.

In a statement, Garnar said: "This is serious." He said the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases "is exactly why we all need to stay at home whenever possible to stop the spread."

Because of the spike in local cases, the hours at the state drive-thru testing site at the Binghamton University campus in Vestal are being expanded.

The testing center, which has been operating only on weekdays now will offer testing on Sunday. People wishing to be tested at that site may make an appointment by calling (888) 364-3065.

A rapid testing site is to be set up in Broome County. Details on its location and operating hours now are expected to be announced early next week.
