COVID-19 has taken out a major sports event in Binghamton this summer. The 2020 LG&T Tennis Challenger that was scheduled for July in Binghamton has been canceled. The tournament was scheduled to be played at Recreation Park in Binghamton July 20-26.
The ATP, the sanctioning body of professional tennis, has suspended all tennis events globally until July 13, 2020. The USTA Pro Circuit tour of which the LG&T Tennis Challenger is a member, and local organizers announced this (Friday) afternoon that the Binghamton event has been canceled.
In a media release Howard Rittberg, spokesman from title sponsor Levene Gouldin & Thompson said "With the uncertainty surrounding this pandemic and its effect on both our community and the broader sports world, organizers have made the difficult decision to cancel the Binghamton Tennis Challenger this summer."
Officials connected with the event say they expect the tournament to return in 2021. The 27th season will make it one of the longest running such tournaments in the country. The City of Binghamton is expected to construct new tennis courts at Recreation Park prior to the 2021 tournament.
