Some people seeking relief from the sweltering heat were disappointed when they visited the Recreation Park swimming pool in Binghamton only to find it had closed early.

The popular pool on the city's West Side was closed almost 90 minutes early on Thursday as temperatures remained in the mid 80s.

According to Binghamton Deputy Mayor Megan Heiman, police officers were sent to the park to investigate "reports of juveniles fight shortly before pool closing time."

In an email to WNBF News, Heiman said "no physical fighting was occurring" when officers arrived at the park. But they "did observe some juveniles who were yelling at each other."

Swimming was suspended "so lifeguards and responding officers could sort out what, if anything, happened."

The pool was closed shortly after 5:30 p.m. It normally remains open until 7 p.m.

Several police officers remained in the park to monitor conditions after those who were involved in the fighting left the area.

The city plans to continue operating the Rec Park pool at its regularly scheduled hours.

The pool is the only city-operated swimming facility now available. It opened for the season on May 24. It's regular hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends. Extended operating hours are to go into effect on June 28.

In her response to an inquiry, Heiman said there are dedicated Binghamton police patrols at city parks which are funded through a grant. She said those patrols will continue, as will the presence of park rangers.
