Copper Thieves Break Into Dozens of Binghamton Homes
Binghamton police now are dealing with a citywide copper crime wave with more than two-dozen burglaries reported in the last few weeks.
Just over two weeks ago, detectives said five residential break-ins by crooks seeking scrap metal had occurred at five vacant homes on the South Side.
Investigators late Monday announced the problem no longer is limited to one section of the city.
Police said they have determined more than 25 burglaries involving copper theft have happened over the last several weeks.
Thieves continue to target houses with "FOR SALE" or similar signs that indicate they are unoccupied.
Burglars typically are entering vacant homes by forcing rear doors or windows. Once they get in, they cut copper pipes and wiring to remove the metal.
Detectives repeated their call for people to be vigilant, keeping a close eye on vacant properties. They urge people who observe suspicious activity to call police immediately.
Those with information related to the series of copper thefts may contact investigators at 607.772.7080.
