Clearing the Way for Johnson City Chick-Fil-A at Oakdale Commons
There's still no official announcement but plans to open a Chick-Fil-A restaurant at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City appear to be moving forward.
The village zoning board of appeals has just approved a sign variance for a new eatery planned for the mixed-use complex at Harry L. Drive and Reynolds Road.
The application for the sign measure was made by Spark JC LLC, which owns the Oakdale Commons.
Mayor Martin Meaney told WNBF News the zoning panel agreed to the variance last week.
The mayor said the name of business was not identified in the request but it was "for a restaurant that's closed Sundays."
According to Chick-Fil-A's website, the company's founder "made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened his first restaurant." That tradition continues today.
Earlier this year, an application for a digging permit for a future Chick-Fil-A referenced the southeast corner of the Oakdale Commons property. That's an area now occupied by a Key Bank branch.
Shortly after the request was filed with UDig NY, yellow signs appeared on the property indicating a permit had been granted for a "Chick-Fil-A" project.
For now, it's business as usual at the Key Bank office. Branch employees were unable to discuss the future of the location when a reporter visited on Tuesday.
The office manager was busy and unavailable to talk about the situation. The Key Bank lease at the location expires later this year.
Spark JC partner Marc Newman in January said there was not a signed lease for any new development at the site.
Newman did not immediately return a call for comment on the matter Tuesday afternoon.
