Police are trying to find the driver of a pickup truck who they say hit a child on a Tioga County roadway and then left the scene.

According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, the hit-and-run crash happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday in Apalachin.

Authorities say the 12-year-old pedestrian was struck by the vehicle near St. Margaret Mary Church on Pennsylvania Avenue between Barton Road and Van Riper Road.

Investigators say the vehicle was described as a grey - possibly dark grey - pickup truck. The vehicle is believed to have sustained damage to its passenger side mirror.

The truck was traveling south on Pennsylvania Avenue, investigators add.

No description of the driver has been released.

Officials did not describe the nature of the child's injuries, except to say they are "non-life threatening." It was not known whether the child was taken to a hospital.

People with information about the pickup truck involved in the incident or the driver may contact the Tioga County Sheriff's Office at (607) 687-1010.

This story was corrected to show authorities did not disclose the gender of the injured child.
