The tractor-trailer overturned at the Exit 6 on-ramp to I-81 South around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say 33 head of cattle were in the trailer when the crash occurred.

According to the Broome County Sheriff David Harder, 38-year-old Nathan Reiss of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, was going too fast as the truck went from Front Street onto the ramp.

Two of the animals were found dead inside the trailer and two more were euthanized because they had sustained serious injuries. The other cattle were gradually removed from the trailer to be loaded onto other trucks to be transported to a Pennsylvania slaughterhouse.

Reiss was cited for operating at a speed not reasonable for conditions.

Harder said he had been advised the truck involved in the crash had been taken out of service last week in Pennsylvania for seven violations. He said he believed it should not have been on the road because of those issues.

The entrance ramp to I-81 South was closed for several hours while workers moved the cattle to other trucks and the wrecked tractor-trailer was removed from the scene.
