As construction nears completion on a new nursing home in Vestal, the facility it will replace is being viewed as having potential for a residential project.

The Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Vestal Road sustained extensive flood damage in September 2011.

Nursing home residents now are living at two temporary sites in Vestal and Binghamton. A new facility is expected to open this summer on Sheedy Road in Vestal.

Administrator Denise Johnson says the old building is structurally sound. She says areas which sustained flood damage were gutted and cleaned.

Speaking recently on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Johnson said the property has been maintained and currently is being used for storage.

Johnson said the site could present a "good opportunity" for future use. She said prospective buyers have toured the property.

The building, which has 102,000 square feet of space, sits on a five-acre site.

The sale price for the site is listed at $195,000, according to a local property broker.
