The Broome Sports Foundation held its annual Sports Collectibles and Memorabilia auction Friday night at NYSEG Stadium when the Binghamton Mets played to host to the Trenton Thunder.  Dozens of items were up for bid.  The charitable group raises money for scholarships that are awarded to outstanding area high school and college student athletes.

The Foundation awards Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarships to deserving outstanding student athletes.  The scholarships are presented in memory of Tommy Mitchell, a young hockey player who was tragically killed in a car crash on the way to his youth  hockey game.  They are given out in both hockey and baseball categories.

So far the Broome Sports Foundation has awarded over $100,000 dollars in scholarship aid.  This weekend's auction brought in over $3,500 .  The Broome Sports Foundation baseball scholarship winners will be announced next month.

Auction items included autographed baseballs from Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and Johnny Bench, a Ben Rothlisberger autographed Pittsburgh Steeler jersey and a  jersey autographed by Baseball Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven.
