Broome County is looking for public comment on the idea of using the closed Broome Developmental Center as a drug treatment and recovery center.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the proposal makes sense and would put the massive, vacant facility to good use.

Garnar had suggested using the center that was closed by New York State last year during his campaign.

He says his office has gotten inquiries from interested parties, that he would not name.

Any providers looking to offer treatment or rehabilitation support would need to file applications with the State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services while Broome County would have to demonstrate to the state a need for services.

People can submit comments to the county by calling the Executive’s office or by email at gobroomecounty.com.
