Broome County is getting a new investigator to look, specifically, into drug overdose deaths.

Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwell and Binghamton Mayor Richard David yesterday announced that retiring Binghamton Police Investigator Jeffrey Wagner will look into all overdose deaths in the County, maintain records, coordinate with police agencies and family members, and recommend criminal charges, when appropriate, for drug dealers.

Mayor David says the new partnership thinks outside the box in order to save lives.

Wagner will be an employee of the District Attorney’s Office and work with all local law enforcement agencies.

It is a part-time position paying $36,792 through the end of next year.  The City is paying 60-percent of the cost with the District Attorney’s Office paying the rest through traffic diversion funding.

Wagner starts his new job on November 21
