Broome Legislature Approves Budget With Tax Cut

Broome County residents will be paying a little less on their property taxes for the fourth straight year.

The Legislature November 4 approved the proposed $409-million budget for 2022 that contains a decrease in the property tax levy of .12%.

The only changes made to the ledger proposed by County Executive Jason Garnar were amendments made during the budget discussions.

In a joint statement by Legislative Chairman Dan Reynolds and Finance Committee Chair, Steve Flagg, the lawmakers say they continue to have some reservations concerning the amount of revenue that will be coming in over the next year given the continuing coronavirus pandemic and uncertain economic conditions and promise careful monitoring of spending.

Garnar praised the 13-to-one vote approving his budget proposal.

Garnar also issued a statement. The Democrat highlighted new programs contained in the spending plan including a new youth mental health program, plans for road and infrastructure improvements and the addition of a new position in the Planning Department.

Reynolds and Flagg say the County Executive will hold a public hearing on the budget Wednesday, November 10.
