A new program in Broome County is expected to quickly help find people with special needs who have a tendency to wander off.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has announced the implementation of Project Lifesaver that is being funded through a grant.

Under the program, adults with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related disorders and children with autism, Down Syndrome or traumatic brain injuries could wear a special wrist or ankle bracelet equipped with a transmitter that can be quickly tracked by authorities.

Each of the bands cost $350 but is being paid for through grants.

There are 30 bracelets available for Broome County residents with thirteen designated specifically for children.

For information about qualifying for a Project Lifesaver band, call 778-2391 or email projectlifesaver@co.broome.ny.us.
