See. Broome County is a great place to visit! On September 23rd, Visit Binghamton announced that in 2023, the county experienced unprecedented growth in tourism.
Record levels were reached from visitor spending and economic impact. According to the Visit Binghamton announcement, tourism has been a major economic factor for the region, showing the Central New York region for tourism to be a 5.1 billion dollar industry, according to a recent Tourism Economics Report.
The economic impact of tourism in Broome County in 2023 saw an increase of 18.5% over 2022, reaching $585 million. This impact resulted in 5,465 jobs in our area, according to Visit Binghamton.
When it came to spending money, tourists to our area spent $5 million, which is an increase of 6.2% over 2022. Visit Binghamton notes that the lodging business saw the highest visitor spending with visitor expenditure of just over $2 million. The food and beverage industry came in next at around approximately $886,000.

This recent growth is not only indicative of the greater Broome County area's popularity but highlights the resiliency and dynamism of our local economy, according to the report from Visit Binghamton.
This enhanced economic impact has resulted in 5,465 jobs in our area, further demonstrating the importance tourism plays in supporting Broome County and its communities.
Record Visitor Spending Overall visitor spending in Broome County reached over $5M in 2023, an increase of 6.2% over 2022. Visitor spending affects many areas of the local economy and is distributed between lodging, recreation, transportation, food and beverage, and retail, each playing a major role in our economy. The lodging business saw the highest visitor spending with visitor expenditure of a little over $2 million, followed by food and beverage at approximately $886,000.
As for tax revenue, Visit Binghamton reported that tourism generated taxes totaling $46.541 million in 2023. That breaks down to $25.091 million in local taxes (direct and indirect taxes combined), and $21.450 million additional New York State taxes. Final net revenue through tourism in Broome County contributed to a unique tax savings of an estimated $572 per household.
