The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division successfully apprehended a fugitive wanted for murder in Georgia. Dawensley Astrel, a 21-year-old resident of Binghamton, was taken into custody on Monday, September 16 following a coordinated effort by law enforcement authorities.

The arrest stemmed from information received by members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office last week, indicating that Astrel had an active arrest warrant for murder issued in Georgia. Further investigations revealed that he was residing in the Binghamton area and attending Broome Community College as a student.

Acting on this information, the BCSO team collaborated with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to execute the arrest of Astrel without any untoward incident. The operation culminated on Monday, September 16, 2024, when Astrel was apprehended on the college campus. He is now in custody and is set to be extradited by law enforcement officials from Georgia to face the pending charges against him.

In response to this development, SUNY Broome released a statement on behalf of the college, affirming that its Office of Public Safety worked closely with the Sheriff's Office to take Astrel into custody. Additionally, the college indicated that Astrel was currently registered on a part-time basis.

Furthermore, SUNY Broome emphasized that college operations were not impacted, and at no point was there a threat to students or staff. The college's swift collaboration with law enforcement authorities and the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its campus community were been paramount in effectively managing the situation.
