If your home office is overflowing with old documents you’ve been meaning to get rid of, get ready for Saturday, June 28 because the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management is hosting a free paper shredding event that makes decluttering simple and secure.

Drive-Up and Done

No need to haul boxes around or break a sweat because this this event is completely drive-up. Just head to SUNY Broome’s Parking Lot 1, located off Lt. Vanwinkle Drive, anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m..

You’ll follow signs and volunteers will guide you through: turn right onto South College Drive, bear right, then turn left into Lot 1. Pop your trunk or unlock your backseat, and the County staff will take it from there. Your boxes stay with you, but your paperwork? Shredded on-site.

What You Can Bring

Each vehicle is allowed up to four document boxes (15”x10”x12”) filled with paperwork. If you’re wondering what qualifies, here’s what’s accepted:

  • Paper of any size or color
  • Items with staples or paper clips still attached
  • Sticky notes
  • White envelopes (with or without those little plastic windows)
  • Manila folders
  • Business cards

What Not to Bring

To keep everything running smoothly, there are a few things they can’t take:

  • Glass or plastic (even plastic folders)
  • Hanging file folders
  • Microfiche or film
  • Carbon paper (remember that stuff?)

Residents Only, Please

This event is strictly for Broome County residents, so businesses will need to find alternative shredding services. It’s a great opportunity to clean out your personal files. Think bank statements, medical records, and tax returns from a decade ago.
