Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a drainage culvert in eastern Broome County.

The discovery of the body in the Town of Sanford was reported at 11:09 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, a woman who was walking along Big Hollow Road noticed empty cans and a backpack along the roadway. She found the man's body when she looked into the concrete culvert near Cheese Factory Road.

Investigators say the man has been identified as 55-year-old Christian Savu of Route 41 in the Town of Sanford. The circumstances surrounding his death are considered to be suspicious.

Detectives believe Savu either fell or crawled into the culvert. He was known to walk in the Deposit area to collect cans.

The sheriff's office and the Broome County Coroner's Office are investigating Savu's death.
