$10 Million Boscov’s Job Will Affect Downtown Binghamton Traffic
A section of Water Street north of Court Street will be closed to vehicular traffic this week while workers use a crane to lift heating and air conditioning units to the top of the structure.
City officials say Boscov's and other businesses along Water Street will be accessible to pedestrians while the crane is at the job site.
The sidewalk on the east side of the store and the Boscov's customer pickup entrance will be closed through Friday.
People may access the store by using the main Court Street entrance or the Water Street entrance next to the city-owned parking garage.
The $10 million renovation project was announced in November 2023 as part of a deal to keep Boscov's in Binghamton for another decade.
A ten-year lease extension was revealed as the building improvement plan was detailed.
The project called for the upgrading of electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems in the five-story 250,000-square-foot building.
New York state provided $5 million for the work. The city kicked in $2.5 million and Broome County provided $1 million. The city and county money came from federal Covid-19 relief funds.
Boscov's representatives have not indicated when the upgrade work in the store building will be completed. The Binghamton store opened in August 1984.
