Bear sightings in the Twin Tiers are not uncommon, but they don’t normally happen in West Side, Binghamton neighborhoods.

Binghamton Police, at first, someone was pulling a prank when they got a call at around 6 a.m. Friday, May 20 reporting a black bear in the area of Front and Leroy Street near the River House apartments and Roberson Museum.

Four squad cars reportedly responded to the scene and the spooked bruin ran off.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation advises residents to avoid contact with wildlife like bears and coyotes by making sure there are no food sources like bird feeders and trash available to the animals.

No one was injured in the Binghamton bear visit.
