Flags Flying Proudly at New Binghamton Homes for Veterans
A much-anticipated residential community for Broome County veterans is expected to be ready for occupancy soon.
The $12.2 million project is being developed on a site where a bowling alley once stood on Binghamton's North Side.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said workers are applying "some finishing touches" on a building that will house a veterans resource center.
Garnar told WNBF News departments now are setting things up in the facility and "getting settled in."
There will be ten fully-furnished "tiny home" units in the community at 530 State Street, which is located just east of the Binghamton Plaza. The State Bowling Center had occupied the site for several decades.
Six one-bedroom and four two-bedroom residential units will be available to veterans.
American flags are now on display near the entrance to each home.
The modular homes, which were manufactured by a company in Montgomery County, were delivered to the site in June.
Crews have been busy in recent weeks completing interior and exterior work on the units.
On-site laundry facilities are scheduled to be installed in a few days.
A Massachusetts-based organization called Soldier On has been reviewing applications from prospective residents.
Garnar said there will be a lottery to determine who will have an opportunity to live in the homes. He said veterans whose names are selected are to be notified soon. Then leases can be signed and an orientation program will be held.
The county executive said veterans could be residing in the community "sometime in October."
