Binghamton University Student Stabbed Downtown
A Binghamton University student was stabbed in a downtown bar where another student was brutally beaten nine years ago.
Authorities say the latest attack on a student in The Rathskeller bar occurred around 3 a.m. on Saturday.
According to a post on the Binghamton University website, city police reported the student was stabbed in the abdomen while working at the Rathskeller. The bar is located at 92 State Street, less than one block from Binghamton police headquarters.
The attack happened a few hours after thousands of people gathered downtown to view the Luma projection arts show.
The injured student, whose name and age were not released, reportedly was treated at a hospital and released.
The brief statement from the university website indicated a suspect was arrested Saturday afternoon. That person was said to have been charged with assault.
Binghamton police released no information about the assault, which was the week's second reported attack on a student.
A 21-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed by a group of five people late Monday night near the Binghamton University Downtown Center on Washington Street. No arrests have been reported in that attack.
The Rathskeller was the scene of a violent attack on a student in May 2008. In that incident, 22-year-old Bryan Steinhauer was pummeled by Binghamton University basketball player Miladin Kovacevic.
Steinhauer was in a coma for months after the attack. The story gained international attention after Kovacevic fled to his native Serbia.
