Binghamton University's next president has been selected by the State University of New York board of trustees.

Anne D'Alleva will become the university's eighth president. She now is the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Connecticut.

D'Alleva will succeed Harvey Stenger, who last October announced he planned to retire as Binghamton University president. Stenger has held the post since January 2012.

D'Alleva is scheduled to start working as president on November 1.

According to a SUNY news release, D'Alleva has been involved in efforts to expand the University of Connecticut's work in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.

A presidential search committee overseen by the Binghamton University Council evaluated prospective candidates for the job over the last several months.

The committee sent its recommendation for the university's next president to the SUNY Board of Trustees. The choice was not made public before Tuesday's vote by the board.

D'Alleva became the first woman to serve as provost at the University of Connecticut. She previously served as dean of the School of Fine Arts.

D'Alleva first joined the school's faculty in 1999 as a joint appointment to Art History and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies.

D'Alleva received her B.A. in art history from Harvard University and her M.A. and Ph.D in art history from Columbia University with a graduate certificate in feminist theory.
