In recent years Binghamton has really seen a shift. The town that was once painfully empty is filling thanks to new businesses, restaurants, the arts, and of course, an influx of college students, and the town is certainly shifting toward being a safer place, but it isn’t there quite yet.

This certainly isn’t meant to deter anyone from a night on the town in Binghamton, but instead is meant to bring to your attention that you should always be aware of your surroundings and have both a plan and the instincts to protect yourself not only in Binghamton but wherever you are.

Number four on the list of the top ten most dangerous places in New York to be when the sun goes down is Binghamton. Binghamton was beaten out only by Newburgh, Niagara Falls, and Poughkeepsie.

The towns that made the list did so based on a crime data report which was released by the FBI combined with data compiled by Neighborhood Scout.

Binghamton does not have the huge population that other cities on the list have but it has some high numbers of violent crimes including rape and murder. The data pulled shows that Binghamton is only safer than four percent of all other American cities and that you’ve got a one in 144 chance of being a victim of crime in Binghamton.

Also making the list is Elmira, a town located just sixty miles west of Binghamton. Elmira landed at number eight on the list where you have a one in 318 chance of being the victim of a violent crime after the sun goes down.
