Some veteran members of the Binghamton police department are moving up in the ranks following the recent appointment of a new chief.

John Ryan had been serving as interim police chief since last July when longtime chief Joseph Zikuski was placed on administrative leave following an off-duty incident in Johnson City.

Ryan in December was appointed to the chief's post by Mayor Jared Kraham. Ryan was one of four candidates who was considered by the mayor for the job.

Kraham on Tuesday announced the appointment of a new assistant police chief and the promotion of several other officers.

Cory Minor, who had been detective captain since 2020, has become assistant chief. He's been with the Binghamton police department for 26 years.

The department has operated with one assistant chief recently, although there were two assistant chief positions for several years.

Kraham last week told WNBF News that while there are budget constraints in place now, he suggested the option of having an additional assistant "could be looked at" in the future.

In announcing the latest round of police promotions, the mayor said Matthew Hodnik and Bryan Sostowski have been named captains. They both joined the department in 2013.

There are three new lieutenants: Douglas Chavez, John Hlavacek and Garrett Morabito; and four new sergeants: Nathan Burgo, Brian McGuire, Paul Ryan and Nicholas Smith.

The newly-announced promotions took effect on Saturday.
