A Binghamton man is dead following a house fire on the city's South Side.

Authorities say the blaze at 14 McNamara Avenue was reported around 6 p.m. Monday.

Assistant fire chief Michael Griffis said heavy smoke was coming from the two-and-a-half story single family home when firefighters arrived.

A 61-year-old man was found within a few feet of the rear door of the house. He died before arriving at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Griffis said the fire was declared under control after about 35 minutes. He said firefighters were at the scene for just over two hours.

The city fire marshal's office and police detectives are investigating the cause of the blaze.

A police investigator indicated the man's death likely was not a result of the fire. The blaze was not considered suspicious.
