Binghamton Police Shut Down Section of Main Street After Gunshots
A report of shots fired on Binghamton's West Side prompted a lockdown of nearby schools.
Police were sent to the area of Main and Cedar streets on the West Side around 2:50 p.m. Monday.
Callers reporting hearing the sound of gunfire near the Bundy Museum of History & Art. Young people were observed running from the area after the shots rang out.
Police officers focused their attention on a three-story apartment building at 132 Main Street. Patrol units shut down Main Street between Crandall and Cedar as they secured the scene.
Some shell casings were said to have been found on the porch of the six-unit apartment house.
Patrol officers and detectives interviewed people who were in and around the building at the time of the shooting.
Nearby residents reported hearing three shots in rapid succession. There were reports that a person who may have been wounded in the incident was seen running away from the scene.
Binghamton police directed West Side schools to move to their lockout protocol after the shooting as a precaution. The procedure came as many students already had been dismissed for the day.
