Binghamton Police Seal Off Neighborhood After Report of Gunfire
Police converged on a Binghamton house where a man was shot earlier this year after a woman reported hearing a gunshot.
City police officers sealed off the North Side neighborhood around 5 Sturges Street around 12:35 p.m. Friday.
Broome County sheriff's deputies assisted Binghamton police in setting up a perimeter around the two-story house where the gunfire was said to have been heard.
Binghamton police chief Joseph Zikuski conferred with officers and detectives on Sturges Street. He told WNBF News that there was no indication that anyone was injured. He said police were trying to determine what had happened. Several people were detained by police.
Zikuski said police were called to the same location Wednesday night for an incident that involved at least one of the people who was apparently at the scene when the gunshot was heard.
Neighbors said there have been ongoing problems involving guns and drugs at the house for months.
A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest at 5 Sturges Street on February 25. 28-year-old Christopher Frederick of Binghamton was arrested in April. He was charged with attempted murder in the shooting.
The house is located across the street from the location where 12-year-old Cheri Lindsey was killed in 1984. A memorial garden was opened on the site last November.
