Scott C. Mitchell - the man police believe killed two Binghamton residents - has been taken into custody by authorities in Florida.

The 50-year-old Mitchell had been on the run for more than a week. Binghamton police identified him as the suspect in connection with the deaths of 58-year-old Daniel McCloe and 55-year-old Marshall VanOven.

McCloe and VanOven had been reported missing on the evening of February 3. Their bodies were discovered at a residence on the city's West Side the following day.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office early Wednesday afternoon announced Mitchell was in custody in Daytona Beach.

Mitchell's apprehension was reported shortly after police in Binghamton and Volusia County announced a reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.

In a social media post, the sheriff's office said: "The person who called in the tip just earned $10,000."

It was not immediately known how soon Mitchell could be returned to Broome County to face charges in connection with the deaths of McCloe and VanOven.

Although the deaths were ruled to be homicide, investigators will not discuss any details about how they died or their relationship to Mitchell.

In a news release, Binghamton police chief Joseph Zikuski thanked the Volusia County Sheriff's Office in Florida and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina for their assistance in the investigation.

Both organizations should be recognized for their professionalism and dedication in assisting the Binghamton Police.
