Frustrated flaggers worked to keep Binghamton and Johnson City motorists in line as a pavement milling operation got underway on Main Street.

Eastbound traffic in Johnson City was detoured onto Carhart Avenue as construction work began just past the village and city line.

Some drivers ignored posted "Road Closed" signs and tried to head into Binghamton creating chaotic conditions at times.

Motorists who were leaving homes and businesses in the work zone occasionally attempted to turn into oncoming traffic.

Workers who were trying to direct drivers through the area repeatedly yelled and waved their arms to get the attention of some who appeared oblivious to the proper procedure.

A $6.2 million project to improve safety and upgrade pavement on part of Main Street in Binghamton has been underway for more than three months.

Motorists have been dealing with ongoing slowdowns and pop-up detours, along with new curb extensions at many intersections. Some have said they've found the ongoing changes to be confusing.

The Main Street construction operations will continue over the next few weeks. One-way traffic is to be maintained through the work zone.

Paving between Floral Avenue and Glenwood Avenue is expected to be completed around the end of the month.
