Binghamton Launches $8.9 Million Street Repair Plan

Binghamton is launching close to $9-million in street improvement projects in the City this year.

Over 40 streets are due for milling and paving and $2.1-million is set for full street reconstruction projects.

In all, Binghamton Mayor Richard David says the plans call for $8.9-million to be spent on streets, water and sewer upgrades and improvements to curbs and sidewalks.

The work is being financed through Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program, otherwise known as “CHIPS” grants, Community Development Block Grant funds, federal stimulus money and a local capital bond.

In a news release from the Mayor's office, the City is said to be ready to spend $1.7-million in milling and paving work on over 40 streets, $2.1-million on full street reconstruction, $4.5-million for water and sewer upgrades and $608,000 to bring curbs and sidewalks into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

City officials say milling and paving is planned in all parts of the City and will be done a section at a time by neighborhood with the North Side, South Side, West Side, Downtown, First Ward and East Side done at different times during the construction season.
