Binghamton House Where Deadly Blaze Occurred Condemned

A First Ward building where a woman was found dead after a fire has been condemned by Binghamton code enforcement officials.

The blaze at 89 Glenwood Avenue erupted shortly before 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Binghamton police detectives have not released the name of the woman who died. No other injuries have been reported.

Police and fire investigators have not publicly discussed the cause of the fire, which was confined primarily to a second-floor room in the rear of the two-story structure.

Signs posted on the building by the city code enforcement department indicate the building was condemned on Monday.

Code enforcement supervisor Christopher Schleider could not be reached for comment. Officials at City Hall also were not available to discuss the property Thursday afternoon.

Christian Recene, who owns the apartment house, said it's "very possible" the structure will be repaired. He said he is evaluating his options concerning the building.
