One Year Later: An Update on Shooting of Binghamton High Student
A student who was shot near Binghamton High School a year ago is moving on with his life but it's not known whether a teenage suspect was punished for the attack.
18-year-old Keyshawn Hines was wounded in the chest and hip in the shooting that occurred just west of the school on January 6, 2022.
His mother, Lakeesha Hines, spoke with WNBF News Friday morning and recounted the events of one year ago. She had been at work when the incident happened. She said she "just froze" when she received a call with word that Keyshawn had been shot. Her boss drove her to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
Keyshawn was transferred to a Syracuse hospital after his condition had been stabilized. He returned home several days later.
Lakeesha Hines expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community following the shooting. She said Keyshawn eventually was able to finish his senior year school work and graduate. He's now working at a full-time job.
The name of the 17-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the shooting was never made public. He was discovered hiding in the basement of an Oak Street apartment house by people who were renovating the building.
The suspect was charged with attempted murder and criminal use of a firearm. Authorities won't discuss the disposition of the case.
Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak did not respond to requests for information about whether the youth was prosecuted in connection with the shooting.
