An all-too-brief fling with gasoline prices below two dollars a gallon in the Binghamton area is coming to an end.

Although motorists welcomed the break at the pump over the last several weeks, area gas stations and convenience stores are raising posted prices.

A few holdouts with prices just under the two-dollar mark can be found but those bargains are about to vanish.

Rising crude oil prices are a factor in the higher cost of gasoline. They are at their highest levels in about three months.

Jeffrey Pelton, an analyst for gasbuddy.com, last month warned Binghamton-area drivers to expect prices to rise about five cents a week during March and April.

Pelton said fuel costs would increase as refineries prepared to shift over to summer-blend gasoline. He said he expected prices could stabilize after the transition and they could even start to drop again.

According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the Binghamton area's average price for a gallon of regular gas is just under $2.05. That's up about four cents over the past week and about 14 cents higher than a month ago.
