According to New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, an announcement was made regarding the completion of nearly $11 million in improvements to Court Street in Binghamton.
The project consisted of two separate projects, spanning 2.4 miles from Chapman Street to the Binghamton City line, which involved the replacement of 2,000 feet of retaining wall. This enhancement aimed to improve accessibility and long-term reliability for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The NYS DOT emphasized that the Court Street project is a key connector between Binghamton's Downtown District, the East Side, and the Town of Kirkwood, along with a secondary route for I-81 & I-86 during emergencies.

Binghamton is a gateway to the Southern Tier, and Court Street is a key corridor that people count on every day to get to work, school and downtown businesses, including city, state and county offices and event spaces. Together, these projects have strengthened local connections while supporting commerce and reinforcing NYSDOT’s commitment to safe, resilient infrastructure in communities across the Southern Tier. - New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez

The 2.4-mile reconstruction of Court Street began in 2024 as a $3.9 million project to rehabilitate distressed pavement. The project included:

  • Milling and replacing two inches of roadway with new asphalt.
  • Installing fresh epoxy striping.
  • Enhancing visibility and safety for all roadway users.
  • Sidewalk curb ramps upgraded to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

According to the NYS DOT, a $6.8 millon project to replace the original retaining wall began this month (January 2025) to maintain stability along the slope and protect the roadway and adjacent sidewalk.
Projects like this strengthen our transportation network, improve safety, and support commuters, businesses, and long-term vitality. Thank you to Governor Hochul and Commissioner Dominguez for continuing to make critical investments in Broome County’s infrastructure. - Broome County Executive Jason Garnar
