Thousands of Binghamton University students will mark the end of the spring semester with their annual bar crawl, visiting establishments on the city's West Side and downtown.

The event, which will start Thursday afternoon, has been going on for many years.

The bar crawl has taken place without major incidents over the past few years. City police keep a close watch on participants in an effort to keep things peaceful and safe.

Discussing the student celebration recently on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, university president Harvey Stenger said: "We want them to celebrate. We want them to be proud and happy. We want them to be safe and to make sensible choices during that day."

Stenger said he believes the majority of students understand the dangers of consuming too much alcohol and he expects they'll celebrate responsibly.
