Cold weather and snow have arrived, so we can pretty much say it's the winter season, and that means winter parking rules in our various municipalities are going into effect.

At the beginning of each alternate parking rule season in the municipality that I live in, I get excited. Why? Well, I live next to apartment buildings, and there are always tenants who have moved into the neighborhood over the past spring, summer, and fall who don't necessarily know there is an alternate parking rule or even when it goes into effect.

So when it does, I look out my window to see if any vehicles are parked on the wrong side of the street and wait in anticipation of a parking ticket. Yea, that's the evil side of me. But it only takes one ticket for anyone to quickly get it straight with the rules.

Well, if you are not aware of your community winter parking rules, here's what to know to avoid getting a ticket.
For the Village of Johnson City, the alternate street rules go into effect on December 1st and remain through March 31st. They do give out warning tickets the first week though. That takes the fun out of it for me!

The rule is to park on the even side of the street on even days and odd side of the street on odd days. Check the house numbers to be sure you are on the correct side.

For the City of Binghamton, the rule is the same, except the winter parking season ends on March 15th. The change in odd/even rules for both Binghamton and Johnson City happens at 4:59 pm. Binghamton has a great way of thinking when you park - "Think, park for tomorrow."

For example, if today is the 1st, at 4:59 pm, you need to move your vehicle to the even side of the street until 4:59 pm on the 2nd. And be aware that for any month that ends on the 31st, and you are parked on the odd side of the street, leave it there for the 1st, since it's also an odd day. Otherwise, you could get a ticket.
