Parking Lot Work Starts at Site of Future Boscov's Garage

Although construction on a new city-owned parking garage has yet to begin, workers are preparing the site next to the Binghamton Boscov's store for a temporary lot.

Mayor Jared Kraham has said about 45 spaces will be available for use during the holiday season.

A crumbling 52-year-old parking structure on Water Street was demolished to make way for a new facility. The project to tear down the old garage took several months to complete.

Some Boscov's employees and shoppers said they had expected construction on the new garage would start as soon as the old structure was removed. They had hoped the new 549-space parking facility would be in operation for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

In an email, deputy mayor Megan Heiman advised WNBF News that work on the temporary surface lot started on Monday.

A downtown resident reported hearing a "super loud metal clanging noise" around Boscov's between 2 and 3 a.m. Wednesday. The resident wondered about the source of the "inane noise," noting "it’s driving us crazy and keeping us up."

Heiman said the parking lot construction work will occur during the daytime hours.
